Spinal Surgery

Spinal Surgery | John A. Galeno MD : NY, White Plains

Dr. Galeno is trained in performing minimally invasive spine procedures to correct a spinal problem and lessen pain. He also performs artificial disc replacement. He will want to know if nonsurgical procedures have been effective before recommending spinal surgery.

As a General Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Galeno provides spinal surgery for spinal traumas and tumors. There are various disorders within these categories.

Most spinal traumas occur from auto accidents that involve high speeds. Falling down is another cause of trauma. Some cancer patients develop spinal fractures as a result of the cancer.

Secondary injuries may occur from the original spinal trauma with continuing spinal trauma or spinal instability. Treatment should be given as soon as possible to the original damaged area to minimize secondary trauma. If treatment is obtained early on, neurological deterioration can be prevented and neurological injury can be reversed in some cases.

Elderly patients may have benign osteoporotic fractures from minimal trauma because of age. If there is any question about spinal pain, a spine doctor should be consulted as soon as possible.

Spine fractures cause pain, the first recognized symptom. The pain is increased by movement and activity. The spine doctor can elicit pain just from palpation in the injured area. Other symptoms may be weakness in the extremities, loss of sensation and the loss of control over the bowels and bladder. These symptoms may be acute, or present at the time of the injury, or they may become worse over time.

The diagnosis of spinal trauma is done with X-rays, CT and MRI scans. The spine doctor can see the severity of the injury and usually the extent of it with these tools. There is often soft tissue damage as well, which needs to be discerned. Spinal cord compression is a common cause of pain and damage.

Treatment goals are to decompress the spinal cord and the nerves and to stabilize the spinal column. Any patient with a spinal trauma needs a spine doctor who is experienced and knowledgable. Any injury to or near the spinal cord is serious.
